Physical Activity & Health Education Programme for a Hard to Reach population

                                                                                                                                                                                                                           Sport Works

This programme specifically addresses how physical activity and positive dietary habits contribute towards good health. The programme, which will be delivered on a fortnightly basis, is structured to improve the physical activity profile of children with disabilities within the Tees Valley, a target group which is known to have a greater prevalence of obesity and poor health. Further, the programme will concurrently educate children, parents and carers upon the fundamental principles within nutrition.

The programme will be delivered at community venues within both Middlesbrough and Redcar & Cleveland. Families within both geographical areas will receive direct communication and invitation to sessions; however, the programme is equally accessible to families living within all five Boroughs within the Tees Valley.

The programme will be delivered for a period of six months. In order to establish a sustainable model, a number of selected individuals (comprising of parents, social workers, Local Authority representatives) will receive mentoring and training within Fundamental Movement Skill training and supported to continue programme delivery post HIEC funding. It is proposed that ten individuals be part of this training programme.

The project goals are:
 To evidence an improvement in physical fitness and Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS) profile of participants.
 To evidence improvement in body composition and nutritional intake of those engaged with the programme.
 To raise understanding of fundamental nutritional principles and provide practical recommendations for the implementation of a 'Healthy Eating at Home' programme.
 To reduce the incidence of patient referrals pertaining to health issues which are primarily treatable through improved physical fitness and nutrition.
 To provide a sustainable structure by which service users can maintain regular physical exercise post HIEC funding.
