The government has announced £4 million of funding for businesses to develop cutting-edge ideas to address some of the biggest health problems of our time.
East End Health’s Smooth Enterprises will inspire and educate secondary school pupils to set-up secondary school based enterprises to sell healthy, fresh fruit smoothies to primary schools in Newcastle, increasing children’s fresh fruit and vegetables consumption in some of the most deprived school communities in the UK. EEH will encourage schools to reinvest any profits generated through the scheme into services aimed at tackling other food, nutrition and health related issues in their school communities.
The goals of this project are:
To increase fruit and vegetable consumption in disadvantaged school communities
To establish good dietary habits at an early age
To improve accessibility to healthy and affordable foods
To inspire children to use an entrepreneurial approach to tackle local public health nutrition issues
East End Health will be implementing this project in Tyne & Wear and will be working collaboratively with Newcastle Local Authority, Newcastle Primary Care Trust, and Newcastle Univeristy.
