North East and North Cumbria apply to become an Academic Health Science Network

In response to the recent announcement by the Department of Health to create 'Academic Health Science Networks (AHSNs)', the North East and North Cumbria have submitted an application to become an AHSN.

HIEC North East aims to promote the adoption and diffusion of innovations in healthcare and measure the improvements in outcomes achieved, to ensure the development of a workforce that is actively engaged in innovation. The three core themes span innovative education, innovative technology and innovative service delivery.

To achieve this HIEC North East is interested in actively supporting projects from the NHS, academia, industry, third sector, community providers and education providers.

This funding call is focused on projects associated with public health and social care. Hence, priority will be placed on projects focusing on new ways of doing things to provide the best possible care for the local population and reducing health inequalities. In addition, project proposals that support the health and wellbeing strategy for the North East ‘Better Health, Fairer Health’ and the following ten themes will be given priority: -

  • economy, culture and environment
  • mental health, happiness and wellbeing
  • tobacco
  • obesity, diet and physical activity
  • alcohol
  • prevention, fair and early treatment
  • early life
  • mature and working life
  • later life
  • a good death

The closing date for this call will be 31st January 2011.

Funding will be limited to £50,000 per project. However, there will be discretion to fund up to £100,000 for exceptional projects.
